Robert Saleh’s honeymoon as Jets head coach is over. Fans will expect results as he enters his second season.
The good atmosphere of this off-season continues when Jets reports to the training camp on Tuesday. It’s Saleh’s job to make sure he wins in the next five weeks of work as the season plays against Ravens on September 11.
“I’m an optimist. I think we’re in a really good place. I really do,” Sale said in June. “It’s up to everyone to decide what it looks like in terms of results, but this year is a lot more advanced than it was a year ago.”
Jets has been at the bottom of the NFL for the last decade. Fans know the drill — the last playoff appearance was in 2010 and the last winning season was in 2015. They are hungry for some success. This off-season has brought hope to what looks like a powerful draft, including three first-round picks and some important additions at the free agency.
But Jets had a hopeful spring and summer before that, which brought about a disappointing fall and winter. We are confident that these jets can turn the program around.
“I really think this team can change our culture over the next decade,” linebacker CJ Mosley said in June. “Many people on this team, many coaches who are currently coaching this team, haven’t heard a lot of good things about Jet because they are alive. And now we have a story. We have the opportunity, we have the ability to really change that mindset for the next decade for the future of this organization. “
All of that starts this week at Florham Park. Jets will report to the camp on Tuesday and will have their first practice on Wednesday. They will play a pre-season game with the Eagles, Falcons and Giants next month, and will also practice jointly with the Falcons and Giants.
After the disappointing rookie season, all eyes are on Zach Wilson in the second year quarterback to see if he’s ready to jump in the second year.
“It’s well documented, he spent a rough new year, that is, we all did, including me,” Sale said. “In terms of growth, people forget that he has a young offensive support cast. His receiver is young, his back is young, and O-line is just yelling together, he So young, so for Zack, it’s really just going in the direction of progress, the first quarterback, and all of us knowing what he can do.
“You don’t have to be Tom Brady this year. If it does, that’s great, but that’s not his expectation. He’s expected to keep climbing the mountain. It’s a quarter in this league. It’s backplay and we’ve all got him back. He has a support cast with his tail cut off and he’s just splicing it together. “

Jets, along with tight-end CJ Yuzoma and Tyler Conklin, added wide receiver Garrett Wilson and defended Larken Tomlinson to enhance the quarterback support cast. Now, Jets need to see if that leads to better play from a young quarterback.
“For me, that’s the way I can go there and make the best decisions to put my team in the best position,” Zach Wilson said. “It really matters. How do you do what your coach wants me to do? It’s time to do something off schedule. I’m actually playing inside the offense. Is where you need to make the biggest leap. Just by progressing, you can get through the ball cleanly, take the ball out of your hand, give it to a man and let him play. “
Wilson’s play is not the only story in the camp. The fight on the left tackle between Meky Becton and George Fant, the return of defensive end Carl Lawson, and the improved secondary are some of the other headliners.
Training camps are a time of hope, and Jets has more than he has recently remembered this year. Saleh needs to make sure that the hopes of July lead to the success of September.
