LIMA — A new virtual care system was unveiled at Mercy Health-St in June. Rita’s Medical Center. The Banyan Virtual Nursing System was so successful in the first implemented unit that it was added to two additional units last week.
Currently, Centritas is the only facility in the Mercy Health System that uses this technology, and advocates hope it helps nurses provide better patient care.

Patient consent
Before the virtual nurse “enters” the room, the ringtone warns the patient that the nurse plans to initiate communication. The patient can choose to accept or decline the video each time the virtual nurse makes a request.
Currently, Centritaz uses only the nursing side of the Banyan Virtual Care System, but in the future other areas such as pharmacies and physiotherapy may be used in collaboration with nursing.
Effectiveness of virtual nursing
Virtual nursing uses key performance indicators (KPIs) to assess benefits to patients and nursing staff. KPIs are measurements used to assess the success of a particular activity.
“Virtual nursing KPIs include patient safety, medication adjustments, readmission rates, and nurse-patient communication,” said Taviano.
Virtual care systems are expected to improve quality and patient experience. Patients’ use of call light is expected to decrease by 50% due to increased interaction with the care team.
Taviano, Hill and Griffo all agree that the virtual nursing system allows onsite nurses to spend more time with their patients.
