Columbus Crew scored the team’s eight undefeated streak against another New England Revolution MLS original. As the revolution lost two major players, Gustavo Bou and Giacomo Villioni, the crew sought to attack the opposition in hopes of extending their winning streak to nine.
The first half was all Columbus, and in 10 minutes the first look was good.
Cucho Hernandez found space to dribble in an 18-yard box and put defender Andrew Farrell on the ground with a nifty footwork. Subsequent crosses were deflected towards the crew corner where nothing happened.
A few minutes later, Lucas Serrarayan fired a short free kick to Hernandez, who shot from a distance, missing a nearby post and giving Columbus a 1-0 lead.
The goal of Revolution was good looking, with the right wing consisting of Sebastian Lletget and Brandon Bai being the most advantageous aspect. Goalkeeper Eloy Room maintained a 0-0 tie in about 20 minutes of the first half, making a comfortable save.
Columbus’ second look came 24 minutes after a cross from Luis Diaz sailed the waiting body in the penalty area and fell to Pedro Santos’ feet. Santos has keyed up a one-time shot that forces Petrovic to save. The next header by Serrarayan was cleared from the goal line by revolutionary defender Henry Kessler.
The crew did everything right, from crisp short passes to building opportunities and frustrating opponents.
Columbus’ last definite chance came in the 39th minute when Diaz found space around the box just 18 yards and fired a shot of his left foot rising high over the crossbar.
With Columbus kicking off in the second half, Black & Gold kept their feet on the gas, retained ownership and played where they had the chance.
The crew continued to put pressure in the 60th minute of the short corner from Serrarayan to Santos. Santos has found a space to take the shots saved by Petrovic.
Black & Gold had two other opportunities to try again, but couldn’t find the other side of the net.
Over time in the second half, the revolution seemed to force Columbus to play in their game, but the crew bent and didn’t break.
As time was reduced and the last whistle was visible, the crew sat down to absorb the last ditch effort made by New England. It did not hurt Columbus, but it did not bear any fruit, as they created their own opportunity.
Black & Gold draws this 0-0 and extends the undefeated run to 9 games.
Ownership is the key
When holding the ball, the crew is more free and loose. With the creation of opportunities, Black & Gold scored more shots in the goal and had a sharper and sharper pass to break the defense of the revolution.
Undefeated at 9
Sure, the streak is great, but I realize that the team wanted three points. It was a game ready for take-up, as the revolution lost two of their best players. New England played with a 0-0 draw and snapped a two-game unsuccessful run.
What’s next?
Columbus will make his second appearance this season on the extended side of Charlotte FC next weekend. Their last meeting ended with a one-on-one draw in the Lower.com field.
